Our popular Fungi Foray was a great afternoon out, luckily the sun came out at just the right time! We found 9 different varieties of Waxcap fungi – if our identifications are confirmed this could make the site “Regionally Important”.

Many thanks to SinCH members for contributing these photos.
Our guide Richard is a local expert in pasture fungi and he has been checking the Cliffs area periodically over a long number of years and he has noticed that the waxcaps appear to be increasing and he suggests this is helped by the new grazing regime inititated by the National Trust.
We didn’t cover the whole area but within 2 hours we were able to identify 9 distinct waxcap species and we have passed this data onto the Shugborough Estate so they aware of what we found.

Want to “dig deeper”? An interesting blog on Staffordshire Wildlife Trust’s website is worth checking out here and an in-depth article by Merlin Sheldrake here . You can also check out local sightings of fungus and lichens here.
Warning: never eat fungi unless you are absolutely sure what you are collecting!
