Join us for an evening talk – all welcome!
7.00pm for 7.30 start upstairs at the Great Haywood Sports & Social Club.
We are very pleased to host a talk by local entomologist Jon Webb. Jon works for Natural England, and for over a decade served as a national specialist focusing on beetles, wetlands and woodland. He’s now a Deputy Director in the Chief Scientist Directorate so he doesn’t get out as much as he’d like.
Jon will start with an interactive introduction to the insects of the UK and then highlight overlooked habitats that are important for rare insects. We are very lucky to have these habitats on our doorstep!
The first of these is river edges (riparian habitats). This habitat is not quite aquatic and not quite terrestrial so, being somewhere in the middle, they have been somewhat ignored. If time allows, Jon will also look at veteran trees such as those at Brocton Coppice and the Shugborough Estate – a habitat overloaded with rare and threatened insects.
There will be plenty of opportunity for questions and breaks.
For more information about invertebrates in general and beetles specifcially check out the Wildlife Trusts website here and here.
We are also mapping our local biodiversity to support our local Help Nature Thrive work in support of the Parish Council’s Green Infrastructure Plan. We use the i-Naturalist phone app to do this so everyone can help with this – for more information about how to take part please see a previous news item here.
Why not check out our Insect project photo page showing what we have seen so far?
All welcome
